You use my top 5 basic makeup brushes daily. You even have a few advanced makeup brushes mixed in. You know you should do it; the makeup build-up frankly grosses you out but even just thinking about cleaning your makeup brushes is exhausting. To help your brushes do their job effectively (in applying makeup flawlessly to your face), you need to be cleaning them. Makeup will go on more smoothly with a clean makeup brush.
This method is a really simple way of removing makeup residue and dirt from your brushes. It can be done to clean your brushes on a regular basis (once a week) or in between color changes, ie: you use the same brush to apply blush, bronzer, and highlighter. A quick clean requires a specific brush cleaner, like Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner or Sephora Dry Clean Instant Dry Brush Cleaner and a tissue or paper towel. Saturate the hairs of the brush in the cleaner and then gently wipe brush on tissue. Repeat until the brush is clean. There's pretty much zero dry time so this can be done after every use or at least once a week (if you're using your brushes daily).
At least once a month, you should be deep cleaning your makeup brushes. All you need is a gentle shampoo, water and counter space. Wet the hairs of your brush with warm water. Add a bit of shampoo and gently swirl the brush to create a lather, just as you would wash your hair. I use a very DIY version of this Sigma Brush Cleaning Mat--I used a hot glue gun to put random dots and swiggles on a plastic dinner plate--but you can also just use the palm of your hand. Next, rinse the hairs of the brush thoroughly in running water. To avoid getting water into the ferrule of the brush (the part where the hairs connect with the handle of the brush), keep the brush facing downward. Lastly, press out any excess water, reshape the hairs and lay the brush flat on a towel to air dry overnight. It took longer for me to write this post than it takes for a deep clean, so it's best to #justdoit.
