As the seasons change, it’s important to look at your skincare and makeup routines and re-evaluate your needs. Now that we’re deep into summer, I did just that and figured I’d share my own summer makeup essentials with you. To up my summer game, I added just 5 products. Here’s a quick video tutorial showing how it all comes together, with product details below.
Safe Mineral Sunscreen
It’s great to have sunscreen stashed in all of the places you’re likely to need a reapplication: your purse, beach bag, picnic basket, sports wagon, by the door… But the place I forgot about was with my other skincare. (Shock! Horror!) So I upped the ante and added 4 to my vanity. I use Hynt Beauty Sun Prep (1) right on top of my moisturizer. It’s lightweight and leaves a luminous finish. Beautycounter Countersun Mist (2) is perfect for your body, when wearing those tanks and short shorts. Suntegrity Impeccable Skin (3) has a more matte finish, though I found it to be more skin-like than true matte—no complaints about that here. I added the UnSun (4) to my travel cosmetics bag. It is less coverage than the Suntegrity Impeccable Skin.
A powder foundation is great for the summer to help mitigate shine and will last longer than a cream formula during these hot summer months. Plus, you can use it to refresh your makeup all year round, too. Press the powder onto your skin with a dry sponge (or use a brush for lighter coverage). Alima Pure has two formulas of powder foundation: pressed (1) and loose (2), both with fantastic shade range. You get a bit more coverage with the loose powder, but the pressed formula might be easier to reapply during the day. If you’re at all concerned about looking cakey, apply the powder only where you get excess shine, or need extra coverage. W3ll People Bio Base Baked Foundation (3) is another clean powder foundation option with more limited color range.
This is an easy way to get that summer glow, without the sun. Sweep a powder bronzer with a bit of shimmer in a ‘3’ and ‘E’ along the perimeter of your face. Use it as blush on your cheekbones and even on your lids to complete the bronzed goddess look. I used the W3ll People Bio Baked Bronzer (1) in the video and layered it to get my desired level of bronze. This formula comes in one universal shade which has a “matte radiance” finish, which I love. Other options include Beautycounter Radiant Bronzer (2) has smooth buildable color in three shades with the most subtle sheen; Kjaer Weis Powder Bronzer (3) offers two shades without any shimmer; and Lily Lolo Pressed Bronzer (4) comes in three matte shades.
I’m so happy the slick lip gloss look from the 90’s is back! Summer is the perfect time to reach for a formula that needs no mirror to apply. I used this one from Kjaer Wies (1). Other clean lip glosses I’m loving include: Fit Glow Beauty Lip Serum (2) helps diminish fine lines; Ere Perez Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint (3) can be used on cheeks and lips, leaving a beautiful long-lasting stain; and Beautycounter Lip Gloss (4) in Azalea is in my purse for a perfect subtle pop of color.
I use Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara (1) all year round and find it completely life-proof. If you’re going to be out in the sun, you’re going to be sweating and to be, that means I need mascara that doesn’t melt down my face. Another option is Ere Perez Avocado Waterproof Mascara (2), which claims to stimulate growth, regenerate and strengthen lashes as well as provide 24-hour wear.
What do you think of this look? Will you try it? I’d love to hear from you, what are your summer essentials?
